What is the solubility product (Ksp)?

Short answer

The solubility product constant, Ksp, is the equilibrium constant for a slightly soluble ionic solid dissolving in water. It equals the product of the dissolved ion concentrations, each raised to its coefficient in the dissolution equation. A larger Ksp means a more soluble salt; comparing Ksp to the reaction quotient predicts whether a precipitate forms.
