Abstract

Concentration, temperature, surface area and catalysts.

Concept preview

What you will be able to do

  1. 01List the factors that affect reaction rate
  2. 02Explain how each factor changes the rate
  3. 03Apply the factors to everyday and industrial situations

Chemists can speed up or slow down a reaction by controlling a small set of factors. Five stand out: the nature of the reactants themselves, the concentration of the reactants, the temperature, the surface area of any solids involved, and the presence of a catalyst. Learning what each does — and why — gives you control over almost any reaction.
