What is AP Chemistry?

A 0.10 M aqueous solution of a weak monoprotic acid HA is measured to have a pH of 3.0. Estimate the acid-dissociation constant, Ka. (This is an original example, not an exam question.)
- 1. pH 3.0 means [H⁺] = 10⁻³ = 1.0 × 10⁻³ M.
- 2. For HA ⇌ H⁺ + A⁻, [H⁺] ≈ [A⁻] ≈ 1.0 × 10⁻³ M.
- 3. The un-ionized acid is [HA] ≈ 0.10 − 0.001 ≈ 0.10 M.
- 4. Ka = [H⁺][A⁻] / [HA] ≈ (1.0 × 10⁻³)² / 0.10 = 1.0 × 10⁻⁵.
