What you will be able to do
- 01Understand the principles of the Aufbau, Pauli Exclusion, and Hund's rules in electron configuration.
- 02Learn how to construct and interpret orbital diagrams for elements.
- 03Apply the rules of electron configuration to predict the chemical properties of elements.
- 04Analyse exceptions to predicted electron configurations and explain their basis.
The electron configuration of an atom describes the distribution of electrons in its atomic orbitals. This configuration is crucial for understanding the chemical properties and reactivity of elements. The arrangement of electrons is governed by three fundamental principles: the Aufbau principle, the Pauli Exclusion Principle, and Hund's Rule. Each of these rules provides a guideline for how electrons occupy atomic orbitals, which are regions in space where there is a high probability of finding an electron. Understanding these principles allows chemists to predict and explain the behaviour of elements in chemical reactions. In this lesson, we will delve deeply into these principles and explore how they are used to construct electron configurations and orbital diagrams.
