What are the main types of chemical reactions?
Short answer
The common reaction types are synthesis (combination), decomposition, single replacement, double replacement, and combustion. Synthesis combines simpler substances into one; decomposition breaks one into simpler ones; single and double replacement exchange ions between reactants; and combustion reacts a fuel with oxygen to release energy. Recognizing the type helps you predict products.

Frequently asked questions
- How do you identify a reaction type?
- Look at how many reactants and products there are and how atoms rearrange — e.g. two reactants forming one product is synthesis.
