Abstract

What a chemical equation shows and the laws it must obey.

Concept preview

What you will be able to do

  1. 01Recognise the signs that a chemical reaction has occurred
  2. 02Read the parts of a chemical equation
  3. 03State the four conservation laws that reactions obey

A chemical reaction occurs when starting chemicals form different chemicals. No single clue proves it, but several changes together give strong evidence: a temperature change, the appearance of a differently coloured material, or the formation of a new phase (a gas bubbling off or a solid appearing). When these are seen, chemists say the starting species have reacted to form new substances.
