Abstract
From atoms and molecules up to the biosphere.
Concept preview
What you will be able to do
- 01List the levels of biological organization in order from atom to biosphere.
- 02Identify the level of organization illustrated by a given example.
- 03Explain what emergent properties are and why they appear as you move up the levels.
- 04Explain why the cell is the pivotal level in the hierarchy of life.
One of biology's most powerful ideas is that living systems are built in a nested hierarchy — small, simple parts combine into larger, more complex wholes, each level containing all the levels below it. An atom is part of a molecule, which is part of an organelle, which is part of a cell, and so on up to the whole living planet. This is not just tidy bookkeeping. Each level has its own structures, its own behaviours and its own questions, and a biologist chooses the level that matches the problem they are trying to solve — a biochemist works among molecules, a doctor among organs, an ecologist among populations.
