Concept preview

What you will be able to do

  1. 01Distinguish a physical property from a chemical property
  2. 02Distinguish intensive from extensive properties
  3. 03Explain why intensive properties are used to identify substances

Matter is anything that has mass and occupies space — it is what makes up the universe, apart from energy. Chemistry is the science concerned with the properties, composition and behaviour of matter. A substance is something with a unique and identifiable set of properties, so two objects with different properties must be made of different substances. This unit examines physical properties; later units examine composition and behaviour.
