Some organic compounds contain a particularly stable ring of carbon atoms that behaves quite unlike the chains met so far. These are the aromatic compounds, and at the heart of every one lies the benzene ring. The name 'aromatic' comes from the strong smells of the first examples studied, but chemically the word now marks this special, stable ring structure rather than any odour.
