What is the difference between mechanical and chemical digestion?
Short answer
Mechanical digestion physically breaks food into smaller pieces — chewing in the mouth and churning in the stomach — increasing surface area without changing the molecules. Chemical digestion uses enzymes and acids to break large molecules into small absorbable ones, such as proteins into amino acids. The two work together throughout the digestive tract.
