What is Physics 12 in British Columbia?
Short answer
Physics 12 is the BC senior-physics course covering vectors and two-dimensional kinematics, dynamics and momentum, circular motion and gravitation, electricity and circuits, and electromagnetism. It builds on the motion, forces, and energy foundation of Physics 11 and develops the modelling skills expected in university physics.
Course overview
Physics 12 deepens mechanics and introduces electricity and magnetism. You extend motion to two dimensions with vectors, analyse momentum and collisions, study circular motion and gravitation, then move into electric circuits and electromagnetism. Throughout, the emphasis is on modelling a system carefully before calculating.

A 2.0 kg cart moving at 3.0 m/s collides and sticks to a stationary 1.0 kg cart. Find their common velocity after the collision.
- 1. Momentum is conserved: total before = total after.
- 2. Before: p = (2.0 kg)(3.0 m/s) + (1.0 kg)(0) = 6.0 kg·m/s.
- 3. After, the carts move together with mass 3.0 kg at velocity v: 3.0v = 6.0.
- 4. v = 2.0 m/s in the original direction.

- Is Physics 12 hard?
- It is a step up from Physics 11 — momentum, circular motion, and electromagnetism demand careful setup. Students who build the diagram and identify the conserved quantity first usually do well.
- Do I need Physics 11 before Physics 12?
- Yes — Physics 12 assumes the kinematics, forces, and energy foundation from Physics 11.
- What math do I need for Physics 12?
- Solid algebra and trigonometry (for vector components); it pairs well with Pre-Calculus 12.
- Does Dr. Shreyank Educare offer AP Physics?
- Not at this time. Physics is offered as BC Physics 11 and Physics 12; AP Physics is not currently a live course.
- What is the best way to study Physics 12?
- Translate each problem into a labelled diagram and a conserved-quantity statement before writing equations. Most lost marks come from setup, not arithmetic.
